Problem

Estimation of mean and variance. Consider a random variable x∈Rx \in \mathbf{R} with density pp, which is normalized, i.e., has zero mean and unit variance. Consider a random variable y=(x+b)/ay = (x+b)/a obtained by an affine transformation of xx, where a>0a > 0. The random variable yy has mean b/ab/a and variance 1/a21/a^2. As aa and bb vary over R+\mathbf{R}_+ and R\mathbf{R}, respectively, we generate a family of densities obtained from pp by scaling and shifting, uniquely parametrized by mean and variance. Show that if pp is log-concave, then finding the ML estimate of aa and bb, given samples y1,…,yny_1, \ldots, y_n of yy, is a convex problem. As an example, work out an analytical solution for the ML estimates of aa and bb, assuming pp is a normalized Laplacian density, p(x)=e−2∣x∣p(x) = e^{-2|x|}.
