Problem

A cannon of mass 500 kg500\,\text{kg} rests on a smooth horizontal track. It fires a shell of mass 2 kg2\,\text{kg} horizontally with a speed of 400 m/s400\,\text{m/s} measured with respect to the ground. (i) Find the speed with which the cannon starts moving immediately after the shot is fired. (ii) The cannon is then brought to rest by a set of brakes acting over a distance of 3.0 m3.0\,\text{m}. Assuming the braking force is constant, calculate its magnitude. (iii) Determine the percentage of the total kinetic energy produced in the explosion that is possessed by the cannon at the instant just after firing.
