Problem

A factory siren produces a steady frequency of 1.0 kHz1.0\,\text{kHz}. In air, the measured wavelength of the sound is 0.34 m0.34\,\text{m}, while in water it is 1.48 m1.48\,\text{m}. a. (i) Calculate the speed of sound in air. b. (ii) Calculate the speed of sound in water. c. (iii) Determine the time taken for the sound to travel 2.0 km2.0\,\text{km} in air and in water. Give both answers correct to two significant figures. d. (iv) Explain briefly why the speeds obtained in parts (i) and (ii) are different.
