Problem

The winding number nn for a map from S1→S1S^1 \to S^1 is given by eq.\,(92.11), where U†U=1U^\dagger U = 1. We will prove that nn is invariant under an infinitesimal deformation of UU. Since any smooth deformation can be made by compounding infinitesimal ones, this will prove that nn is invariant under any smooth deformation. a) Consider an infinitesimal deformation of UU, U→U+δUU \to U + \delta U. Show that δU†=−U†2δU\delta U^\dagger = -U^{\dagger 2}\delta U. b) Use this result to show that δ(U∂ϕU†)=−∂ϕ(U†δU)\delta(U\partial_\phi U^\dagger) = -\partial_\phi(U^\dagger \delta U). c) Use this to show that δn=0\delta n = 0.
