Problem

(a) Show that xddx(δ(x))=−δ(x).x \frac{d}{dx}(\delta(x)) = -\delta(x). [Hint: Use integration by parts.] (b) Let θ(x)\theta(x) be the step function: θ(x)≡{1,if x>00,if x≤0.\theta(x) \equiv \begin{cases} 1, & \text{if } x > 0 \\ 0, & \text{if } x \le 0 \end{cases}. Show that dθ/dx=δ(x)d\theta/dx = \delta(x).
