Problem

(Challenging) Generalize the previous exercise. Show that f∈R([a,b])f \in \mathcal{R}([a,b]) if and only if there exists an I∈RI \in \mathbb{R}, such that for every ϵ>0\epsilon > 0 there exists a δ>0\delta > 0 such that if PP is a partition with Δxi<δ\Delta x_i < \delta for all ii, then ∣L(P,f)−I∣<ϵ\bigl|L(P,f) - I\bigr| < \epsilon and ∣U(P,f)−I∣<ϵ\bigl|U(P,f) - I\bigr| < \epsilon. If f∈R([a,b])f \in \mathcal{R}([a,b]), then I=∫abfI = \int_a^b f.
