Problem

Let F\mathfrak{F} be a commuting family of diagonalizable normal operators on a finite-dimensional inner product space VV and a0\mathfrak{a}_0 the self-adjoint algebra generated by F\mathfrak{F}. Let a\mathfrak{a} be the self-adjoint algebra generated by F\mathfrak{F} and the identity operator II. Show that (a) a\mathfrak{a} is the set of all operators on VV of the form cI+TcI + T where cc is a scalar and TT an operator in a0\mathfrak{a}_0. (b) There is at most one root rr of a\mathfrak{a} such that r(T)=0r(T) = 0 for all TT in a0\mathfrak{a}_0. (c) If one of the roots of a\mathfrak{a} is 00 on a0\mathfrak{a}_0, the projections P1,…,PkP_1, \ldots, P_k in the resolution of the identity defined by F\mathfrak{F} may be indexed in such a way that a0\mathfrak{a}_0 consists of all operators on VV of the form T=∑j=2kcjPjT = \sum_{j=2}^{k} c_j P_j where c2,…,ckc_2, \ldots, c_k are arbitrary scalars. (d) a=a0\mathfrak{a} = \mathfrak{a}_0 if and only if for each root rr of a\mathfrak{a} there exists an operator TT in a0\mathfrak{a}_0 such that r(T)≠0r(T) \neq 0.
