Problem

A particle PP of mass mm is attracted towards a fixed origin OO by a force of magnitude mγ/r3m\gamma/r^3, where rr is the distance of PP from OO and γ\gamma is a positive constant. [It's gravity Jim, but not as we know it.] Initially, PP is at a distance aa from OO, and is projected with speed uu directly away from OO. Show that PP will escape to infinity if u2>γ/a2u^2 > \gamma/a^2. For the case in which u2=γ/(2a2)u^2 = \gamma/(2a^2), show that the maximum distance from OO achieved by PP in the subsequent motion is 2a\sqrt{2}a, and find the time taken to reach this distance.
