Problem

Consider a beam of particles with flux F\mathcal{F} (number per unit area per unit time) incident on a scattering center. A detector of area dAdA is placed at angle θ\theta and distance rr from the scatterer. (a) Show that the number of particles per unit time entering the detector is dN˙=F(dσ/dΩ) dΩd\dot{N} = \mathcal{F} (d\sigma/d\Omega)\,d\Omega. (b) Express dσ/dΩd\sigma/d\Omega in terms of the scattering amplitude f(θ)f(\theta). (c) For a spherically symmetric potential, show that dσ/dΩd\sigma/d\Omega depends only on θ\theta.
