Problem

One kilogram of ice at 0∘ ⁣C0^{\circ}\!\text{C} melts reversibly at the same temperature to form water at 0∘ ⁣C0^{\circ}\!\text{C}. The latent heat of fusion of ice is Lf=3.34×105 J kg−1L_f = 3.34\times10^{5}\,\text{J\,kg}^{-1}. a. (i) Calculate the amount of heat absorbed during the melting. b. (ii) Determine the change in entropy of the ice–water system. c. (iii) If the surroundings are also at 0∘ ⁣C0^{\circ}\!\text{C}, compute the entropy change of the surroundings. d. (iv) Hence find the total entropy change of the universe for this melting process.
