Problem

A system comprises NN states, which can have energy 0 or Δ\Delta. Show that the number of ways Ω(E)\Omega(E) of arranging the total system to have energy E=rΔE = r\Delta (where rr is an integer) is given by Ω(E)=N!r!(N−r)!.(4.33)\Omega(E) = \frac{N!}{r!(N-r)!}. \tag{4.33} Now remove a small amount of energy sΔs\Delta from the system, where s≪rs \ll r. Show that Ω(E−ϵ)≈Ω(E)rs(N−r)s,(4.34)\Omega(E - \epsilon) \approx \Omega(E) \frac{r^s}{(N-r)^s}, \tag{4.34} and hence show that the system has temperature TT given by 1kBT=1Δln⁡(N−rr).(4.35)\frac{1}{k_\mathrm{B}T} = \frac{1}{\Delta} \ln \left(\frac{N-r}{r}\right). \tag{4.35} Sketch kBTk_\mathrm{B}T as a function of rr from r=0r = 0 to r=Nr = N and explain the result.
