Problem

Prove the nnth derivative test. Suppose n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}, x0∈(a,b)x_0 \in (a,b), and f:(a,b)→Rf : (a,b) \to \mathbb{R} is nn times continuously differentiable, with f(k)(x0)=0f^{(k)}(x_0) = 0 for k=1,2,…,n−1k = 1, 2, \ldots, n-1, and f(n)(x0)≠0f^{(n)}(x_0) \neq 0. Prove: a) If nn is odd, then ff has neither a relative minimum, nor a maximum at x0x_0. b) If nn is even, then ff has a strict relative minimum at x0x_0 if f(n)(x0)>0f^{(n)}(x_0) > 0 and a strict relative maximum at x0x_0 if f(n)(x0)<0f^{(n)}(x_0) < 0.
