Problem

A function rr is defined for all real numbers, and selected values of r(x)r(x) are listed.
xx5050100100200200400400800800
r(x)r(x)4.974.979.939.9319.8719.8739.7739.7779.5779.57
Assume that, for large positive xx, the graph of rr approaches an oblique (slant) asymptote of the form y=mx+by=mx+b. (a) For each xx in the table, compute the ratio r(x)x\dfrac{r(x)}{x}. Record your results. (b) Use the values from part (a) to estimate the slope mm of the oblique asymptote. Justify your estimate with numerical evidence. (c) Using the slope mm found in part (b), compute r(x)−mxr(x)-mx for each xx in the original table. Record these new values and describe their trend as xx becomes large. (d) Use your work in parts (b) and (c) to write the equation of the oblique asymptote y=mx+by=mx+b. Explain how your numerical findings support both the slope and the intercept of the line.
