Problem

The (time-independent) Schrödinger equation in quantum mechanics is ∇2ψ+(ϵ−bV)ψ=0,\nabla^2\psi + (\epsilon - bV)\psi = 0, where ϵ\epsilon and bb are constants and VV is a given function of rr, θ\theta, ϕ\phi for each problem. In most simple cases VV is a function of rr only (no θ\theta, ϕ\phi dependence). (Physically, VV is the potential energy, and the fact that it depends only on rr implies that we are dealing with central forces, for example, electrostatic or gravitational forces.) Separate the Schrödinger equation in spherical coordinates for the case V=V(r)V = V(r), and show that the θ\theta, ϕ\phi solutions are spherical harmonics (see Problem 16).
