Problem

Let f:Sα2∨Sβ2→Sα2∨Sβ2f: S^2_\alpha \vee S^2_\beta \to S^2_\alpha \vee S^2_\beta be the map which is the identity on the Sα2S^2_\alpha summand and which on the Sβ2S^2_\beta summand is the sum of the identity map and a homeomorphism Sβ2→Sα2S^2_\beta \to S^2_\alpha. Let XX be the mapping torus of ff, the quotient space of (Sα2∨Sβ2)×I(S^2_\alpha \vee S^2_\beta) \times I under the identifications (x,0)∼(f(x),1)(x,0) \sim (f(x),1). The mapping torus of the restriction of ff to Sα2S^2_\alpha forms a subspace A=S1×Sα2⊂XA = S^1 \times S^2_\alpha \subset X. Show that the maps π2(A)→π2(X)→π2(X,A)\pi_2(A) \to \pi_2(X) \to \pi_2(X,A) form a short exact sequence 0→Z→Z⊕Z→Z→00 \to \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Z} \oplus \mathbb{Z} \to \mathbb{Z} \to 0, and compute the action of π1(A)\pi_1(A) on these three groups. In particular, show the action of π1(A)\pi_1(A) is trivial on π2(A)\pi_2(A) and π2(X,A)\pi_2(X,A) but is nontrivial on π2(X)\pi_2(X).
