Problem

Suppose that VV is a nonzero finite-dimensional complex vector space and S,T∈L(V)S, T \in \mathcal{L}(V) commute. Prove that there exist α,λ∈C\alpha, \lambda \in \mathbf{C} such that range⁡(S−αI)+range⁡(T−λI)≠V.\operatorname{range}(S - \alpha I) + \operatorname{range}(T - \lambda I) \neq V.
