THE CANONICAL FORMALISM; STATISTICAL MECHANICS IN HELMHOLTZ REPRESENTATION

Physics — Statistical Mechanics · binary-alloy-two-state

Problem

A binary alloy is composed of N~A\tilde{N}_A atoms of type AA and of N~B\tilde{N}_B atoms of type BB. Each AA-type atom can exist in its ground state or in an excited state of energy ε\varepsilon (all other states are of such high energy that they can be neglected at the temperatures of interest). Each BB-type atom similarly can exist in its ground state of energy zero or in an excited state of energy 2ε2\varepsilon. The system is in equilibrium at temperature TT. a)a) Calculate the Helmholtz potential of the system. b)b) Calculate the heat capacity of the system.
