Problem

If NN is a nilpotent 3×33 \times 3 matrix over C\mathbb{C}, prove that A=I+12N−18N2A = I + \frac{1}{2}N - \frac{1}{8}N^2 satisfies A2=I+NA^2 = I + N, i.e., AA is a square root of I+NI + N. Use the binomial series for (1+t)1/2(1 + t)^{1/2} to obtain a similar formula for a square root of I+NI + N, where NN is any nilpotent n×nn \times n matrix over C\mathbb{C}.
