Problem

In Section 5.3 we found that the e+e−→μ+μ−e^+e^- \to \mu^+\mu^- cross section had the form dσdΩ=e464π2ECM2(1+cos⁡2θ)\frac{d\sigma}{d\Omega} = \frac{e^4}{64\pi^2 E_{\mathrm{CM}}^2}(1+\cos^2\theta) in the center-of-mass frame. (a) Work out the Lorentz-invariant quantities s=(pe++pe−)2s = (p_{e^+} + p_{e^-})^2, t=(pμ−−pe−)2t = (p_{\mu^-} - p_{e^-})^2 and u=(pμ+−pe−)2u = (p_{\mu^+} - p_{e^-})^2 in terms of ECME_{\mathrm{CM}} and cos⁡θ\cos\theta (still assuming mμ=me=0m_\mu = m_e = 0). (b) Derive a relationship between ss, tt and uu. (c) Rewrite dσdΩ\frac{d\sigma}{d\Omega} in terms of ss, tt and uu. (d) Now assume mμm_\mu and mem_e are non-zero. Derive a relationship between ss, tt and uu and the masses.
