Problem

Prove or give a counterexample: If UU is a nonempty subset of R2\mathbf{R}^2 such that UU is closed under addition and under taking additive inverses (meaning −u∈U-u \in U whenever u∈Uu \in U), then UU is a subspace of R2\mathbf{R}^2.
