Problem

Show that, in terms of the variable t^=H0(t−t0)\hat{t} = H_0(t - t_0), the evolution of the normalised scale factor obeys the equation (dadt^)2=Ωm,0 a−1+Ωr,0 a−2+ΩΛ,0 a2+1−Ωm,0−Ωr,0−ΩΛ,0.\left(\frac{da}{d\hat{t}}\right)^2 = \Omega_{\mathrm{m},0}\, a^{-1} + \Omega_{\mathrm{r},0}\, a^{-2} + \Omega_{\Lambda,0}\, a^2 + 1 - \Omega_{\mathrm{m},0} - \Omega_{\mathrm{r},0} - \Omega_{\Lambda,0}. Show that, when one is integrating this equation numerically, an iterative algorithm of the form an+1≈an+(dadt^)nΔt^a_{n+1} \approx a_n + \left(\frac{da}{d\hat{t}}\right)_n \Delta\hat{t} would not be able to propagate the solution through points for which da/dt^=0da/d\hat{t} = 0.
