Problem

Let AA be an m×nm \times n matrix. Show that by means of a finite number of elementary row and/or column operations one can pass from it to a matrix RR which is both 'row-reduced echelon' and 'column-reduced echelon,' i.e., Rij=0R_{ij} = 0 if i≠ji \neq j, Rii=1R_{ii} = 1, 1≤i≤r1 \leq i \leq r, Rii=0R_{ii} = 0 if i>ri > r. Show that R=PAQR = PAQ, where PP is an invertible m×mm \times m matrix and QQ is an invertible n×nn \times n matrix.
