Problem

Suppose VV is finite-dimensional, T∈L(V)T \in \mathcal{L}(V) has an upper-triangular matrix with respect to some basis of VV, and UU is a subspace of VV that is invariant under TT. (a) Prove that T∣UT|_U has an upper-triangular matrix with respect to some basis of UU. (b) Prove that the quotient operator T/UT/U has an upper-triangular matrix with respect to some basis of V/UV/U. The quotient operator T/UT/U was defined in Exercise 38 in Section 5A.
