Problem

Consider Hermitian matrices M1M^1, M2M^2, M3M^3, M4M^4 that obey MiMj+MjMi=2δijI,i,j=1,…,4M^i M^j + M^j M^i = 2\delta^{ij}I, \qquad i, j = 1, \ldots, 4 (1) Show that the eigenvalues of MiM^i are ±1\pm 1. (Hint: go to the eigenbasis of MiM^i, and use the equation for i=ji = j.) (2) By considering the relation MiMj=−MjMifor i≠jM^i M^j = -M^j M^i \quad \text{for } i \neq j show that MiM^i are traceless. [Hint: Tr(ACB)=Tr(CBA)\text{Tr}(ACB) = \text{Tr}(CBA).] (3) Show that they cannot be odd-dimensional matrices.
