Problem

Show that if a single-component system is such that PVkPV^k is constant in an adiabatic process (kk is a positive constant) the energy is U=1k−1PV+Nf(PVk/Nk)U = \frac{1}{k-1}PV + Nf\left(PV^k/N^k\right) where ff is an arbitrary function. Hint: PVkPV^k must be a function of SS, so that (∂U/∂V)S=g(S)⋅V−k(\partial U/\partial V)_S = g(S)\cdot V^{-k}, where g(S)g(S) is an unspecified function.
