Problem

Let VV be R3R^3, with the standard inner product. Let WW be the plane spanned by α=(1,1,1)\alpha = (1, 1, 1) and β=(1,1,−2)\beta = (1, 1, -2). Let UU be the linear operator defined, geometrically, as follows: UU is rotation through the angle θ\theta, about the straight line through the origin which is orthogonal to WW. There are actually two such rotations---choose one. Find the matrix of UU in the standard ordered basis. (Here is one way you might proceed. Find α1\alpha_1 and α2\alpha_2 which form an orthonormal basis for WW. Let α3\alpha_3 be a vector of norm 1 which is orthogonal to WW. Find the matrix of UU in the basis {α1,α2,α3}\{\alpha_1, \alpha_2, \alpha_3\}. Perform a change of basis.)
