Problem

Consider a particle of spin s=3/2s = 3/2. (a) Find the matrices representing the operators S^z\hat{S}_z, S^x\hat{S}_x, S^y\hat{S}_y, S^x2\hat{S}_x^2, and S^y2\hat{S}_y^2 within the basis of S^2\hat{S}^2 and S^z\hat{S}_z. (b) Find the energy levels of this particle when its Hamiltonian is given by H^=ε0ℏ2(S^x2−S^y2)−ε0ℏS^z,\hat{H} = \frac{\varepsilon_0}{\hbar^2}(\hat{S}_x^2 - \hat{S}_y^2) - \frac{\varepsilon_0}{\hbar}\hat{S}_z, where ε0\varepsilon_0 is a constant having the dimensions of energy. Are these levels degenerate? (c) If the system was initially in an eigenstate ∣ψ0⟩=(1000)|\psi_0\rangle = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \\ 0 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}, find the state of the system at time tt.
