Problem

Let f(t)f(t) be the function which is 12\frac{1}{2} for t>t0t>t_0, 00 for t=t0t=t_0, and −12-\frac{1}{2} for t<t0t<t_0. Let K[ϕ]K[\phi] be the linear functional K[ϕ]=∫−∞∞ϕ(t)f(t) dt.K[\phi]=\int_{-\infty}^{\infty}\phi(t)f(t)\,dt. Show that K′[ϕ]≡K[−ϕ′]=ϕ(t0)K'[\phi]\equiv K[-\phi']=\phi(t_0). Thus, δ(t−t0)\delta(t-t_0) may be viewed as the derivative of f(t)f(t).
