Problem

(Challenging) Suppose f:R→Rf : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} is continuous at 00 and such that f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y)f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y) for every xx and yy. Show that f(x)=axf(x) = ax for some a∈Ra \in \mathbb{R}. Hint: Show that f(nx)=nf(x)f(nx) = nf(x), then show ff is continuous on R\mathbb{R}. Then show that f(x)/x=f(1)f(x)/x = f(1) for all rational xx.
