Problem

Define f:S1×I→S1×If : S^1 \times I \to S^1 \times I by f(θ,s)=(θ+2πs,s)f(\theta, s) = (\theta + 2\pi s, s), so ff restricts to the identity on the two boundary circles of S1×IS^1 \times I. Show that ff is homotopic to the identity by a homotopy ftf_t that is stationary on one of the boundary circles, but not by any homotopy ftf_t that is stationary on both boundary circles. [Consider what ff does to the path s↦(θ0,s)s \mapsto (\theta_0, s) for fixed θ0∈S1\theta_0 \in S^1.]
