Problem

Consider the functions p(x)=2x+1p(x)=2x+1, q(x)=x2q(x)=x^{2} and r(x)=3xr(x)=3^{x}, defined for x≥0x\ge 0. a. (i) Without performing any numerical substitutions, explain which of the three functions grows the fastest as xx becomes very large. b. (ii) Draw rough sketches of the graphs of pp, qq and rr on the same set of axes for 0≤x≤50\le x\le5. Label each graph clearly. c. (iii) Using your sketches, identify an interval of xx within 0≤x≤50\le x\le5 where q(x)q(x) exceeds both p(x)p(x) and r(x)r(x). Explain your observation.
