Problem

According to a prediction made by Wigner, at low temperatures and sufficiently low densities, an electron gas should undergo a phase transition to a crystalline structure (bcc). For a qualitative analysis, consider the energy of a lattice of electrons embedded in a homogeneous, positively charged background. Assume that the potential in which each electron moves can be approximated by the potential of a uniformly charged sphere of radius r0=rsa0r_0 = r_s a_0 surrounding each electron. Here, r0r_0 is the mean particle separation in the Wigner crystal with electron density nn, i.e., 4π3r03=1/n\frac{4\pi}{3}r_0^3 = 1/n. This leads to a model of independent electrons (Einstein approximation) in an oscillator potential H=p22m+e22r03r2−3e22r0.H = \frac{p^2}{2m} + \frac{e^2}{2r_0^3}r^2 - \frac{3e^2}{2r_0}. Determine the zero-point energy E0E_0 of this three-dimensional harmonic oscillator and compare this with the result found in the literature: E0=e22a0{−1.792rs+2.638rs3/2}.E_0 = \frac{e^2}{2a_0}\left\{-\frac{1.792}{r_s} + \frac{2.638}{r_s^{3/2}}\right\}. By minimizing the zero-point energy, determine the mean separation of the electrons.
