Problem

Let KK be a commutative ring with identity. If AA is a 2×22 \times 2 matrix over KK, the classical adjoint of AA is the 2×22 \times 2 matrix adj A\mathrm{adj}\, A defined by adj A=[A22−A12−A21A11].\mathrm{adj}\, A = \begin{bmatrix} A_{22} & -A_{12} \\ -A_{21} & A_{11} \end{bmatrix}. If det⁡\det denotes the unique determinant function on 2×22 \times 2 matrices over KK, show that ((a)) (adj A)A=A(adj A)=(det⁡A)I(\mathrm{adj}\, A)A = A(\mathrm{adj}\, A) = (\det A)I; ((b)) det⁡(adj A)=det⁡(A)\det(\mathrm{adj}\, A) = \det(A); ((c)) adj(At)=(adj A)t\mathrm{adj}(A^t) = (\mathrm{adj}\, A)^t. (AtA^t denotes the transpose of AA.)
