Problem

A passenger train is travelling on a straight track at 20 m s−120\,\text{m s}^{-1} when the driver applies the brakes, producing a uniform retardation of 0.5 m s−20.5\,\text{m s}^{-2}. a. (a) Determine the distance covered by the train before it comes to rest. b. (b) The brakes are applied exactly as the locomotive reaches the start of a 500 m500\,\text{m} long platform. Will the train stop before the end of the platform? If yes, how many metres of track will remain when it stops? If no, by how many metres will it overshoot?
