Problem

Show that if Un(ϕ)U_n(\phi) and Uk(ϕ)U_k(\phi) are maps from S1→S1S^1 \to S^1 with winding numbers nn and kk, then Un(ϕ)Uk(ϕ)U_n(\phi)U_k(\phi) is a map with winding number n+kn + k. Hint: consider smoothly deforming Un(ϕ)U_n(\phi) to equal one for 0≤ϕ≤π0 \leq \phi \leq \pi. How should Uk(ϕ)U_k(\phi) be deformed?
