Problem

Let TT be the group of nonsingular upper triangular 2×22 \times 2 matrices with entries in R\mathbb{R}; that is, matrices of the form (ab0c),\begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ 0 & c \end{pmatrix}, where a,b,c∈Ra, b, c \in \mathbb{R} and ac≠0ac \neq 0. Let UU consist of matrices of the form (1x01),\begin{pmatrix} 1 & x \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix}, where x∈Rx \in \mathbb{R}. (a) Show that UU is a subgroup of TT. (b) Prove that UU is abelian. (c) Prove that UU is normal in TT. (d) Show that T/UT/U is abelian. (e) Is TT normal in GL2(R)GL_2(\mathbb{R})?
