Problem

For the positive definite A=[2−1−12]A = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ -1 & 2 \end{bmatrix}, compute ∥A−1∥=1/λ1\|A^{-1}\| = 1/\lambda_1, ∥A∥=λ2\|A\| = \lambda_2, and c(A)=λ2/λ1c(A) = \lambda_2/\lambda_1. Find a right-hand side bb and a perturbation δb\delta b so that the error is the worst possible, ∥δx∥/∥x∥=c∥δb∥/∥b∥\|\delta x\|/\|x\| = c\|\delta b\|/\|b\|.
