Problem

An element xx in a ring is called an idempotent if x2=xx^2 = x. Prove that the only idempotents in an integral domain are 00 and 11. Find a ring with a idempotent xx not equal to 00 or 11. Hint. Suppose that x2=xx^2 = x and x≠0x \neq 0. Since RR is an integral domain, x=1x = 1. To find a nontrivial idempotent, look in M2(R)\mathbb{M}_2(\mathbb{R}).
