Problem

(Electrostatic versus gravitational interaction) Two protons are separated by a distance of 5.0 fm5.0\,\text{fm} (1 fm=1×10−15 m1\,\text{fm}=1\times10^{-15}\,\text{m}). a. (i) Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic force between the two protons. b. (ii) Calculate the gravitational force of attraction between the same protons, taking the mass of a proton as 1.67×10−27 kg1.67\times10^{-27}\,\text{kg} and G=6.67×10−11 N m2/kg2G=6.67\times10^{-11}\,\text{N\,m}^{2}\text{/kg}^{2}. c. (iii) Compute the ratio FelectrostaticFgravitational\dfrac{F_{\text{electrostatic}}}{F_{\text{gravitational}}} and comment briefly on its physical significance for atomic-scale interactions.
