Problem

(a) From the data given in Section 19.2, estimate the rate at which rotational energy is being dissipated by tidal friction for the case of Earth. Hint: This terrestrial problem is similar to the loss of rotational kinetic energy in pulsars; see Eq. (16.30). (b) What fraction of the total energy being lost from Earth's interior can be accounted for by tidal dissipation of its rotational kinetic energy?
