Problem

Consider a three-dimensional vector space spanned by an orthonormal basis ∣1⟩|1\rangle, ∣2⟩|2\rangle, ∣3⟩|3\rangle. Kets ∣α⟩|\alpha\rangle and ∣β⟩|\beta\rangle are given by ∣α⟩=i∣1⟩−2∣2⟩−i∣3⟩,∣β⟩=i∣1⟩+2∣3⟩.|\alpha\rangle = i|1\rangle - 2|2\rangle - i|3\rangle, \quad |\beta\rangle = i|1\rangle + 2|3\rangle. (a) Construct ⟨α∣\langle\alpha| and ⟨β∣\langle\beta| (in terms of the dual basis ⟨1∣\langle 1|, ⟨2∣\langle 2|, ⟨3∣\langle 3|). (b) Find ⟨α∣β⟩\langle\alpha|\beta\rangle and ⟨β∣α⟩\langle\beta|\alpha\rangle, and confirm that ⟨β∣α⟩=⟨α∣β⟩∗\langle\beta|\alpha\rangle = \langle\alpha|\beta\rangle^*. (c) Find all nine matrix elements of the operator A^≡∣α⟩⟨β∣\hat{A} \equiv |\alpha\rangle\langle\beta|, in this basis, and construct the matrix A\mathsf{A}. Is it hermitian?
