Problem

Let z=a+b3 iz = a + b\sqrt{3}\,i be in Z[3 i]\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{3}\,i]. If a2+3b2=1a^2 + 3b^2 = 1, show that zz must be a unit. Show that the only units of Z[3 i]\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{3}\,i] are 11 and −1-1. Hint. Note that z−1=1/(a+b3 i)=(a−b3 i)/(a2+3b2)z^{-1} = 1/(a+b\sqrt{3}\,i) = (a-b\sqrt{3}\,i)/(a^2+3b^2) is in Z[3 i]\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{3}\,i] if and only if a2+3b2=1a^2 + 3b^2 = 1. The only integer solutions to the equation are a=±1,b=0a = \pm 1, b = 0.
