Problem

Let XX be a Moore space M(Zm,n)M(\mathbb{Z}_m, n) obtained from SnS^n by attaching a cell en+1e^{n+1} by a map of degree mm. (a) Show that the quotient map X→X/Sn=Sn+1X \to X/S^n = S^{n+1} induces the trivial map on H~i(−;Z)\tilde{H}_i(-; \mathbb{Z}) for all ii, but not on Hn+1(−;Z)H^{n+1}(-; \mathbb{Z}). Deduce that the splitting in the universal coefficient theorem for cohomology cannot be natural. (b) Show that the inclusion Sn↪XS^n \hookrightarrow X induces the trivial map on H~i(−;Z)\tilde{H}^i(-; \mathbb{Z}) for all ii, but not on Hn(−;Z)H_n(-; \mathbb{Z}).
