Problem

The winding number nn for a map from S2→S2S^2 \to S^2 is given by eq.\,(92.35), where φ^aφ^a=1\hat{\varphi}^a\hat{\varphi}^a = 1. We will prove that nn is invariant under an infinitesimal deformation of φ^\hat{\varphi}. Since any smooth deformation can be made by compounding infinitesimal ones, this will prove that nn is invariant under any smooth deformation. a) Consider an infinitesimal deformation of φ^\hat{\varphi}, φ^→φ^+δφ^\hat{\varphi} \to \hat{\varphi} + \delta\hat{\varphi}. Show that φ^⋅δφ^=0\hat{\varphi}\cdot\delta\hat{\varphi} = 0 and that φ^⋅∂iφ^=0\hat{\varphi}\cdot\partial_i\hat{\varphi} = 0. b) Use these results to show that εabcδφ^a∂iφ^b∂jφ^c=0\varepsilon^{abc}\delta\hat{\varphi}^a\partial_i\hat{\varphi}^b\partial_j\hat{\varphi}^c = 0. c) Use this to show that δn=0\delta n = 0.
