Problem

Consider the differential dz=2xy dx+(x2+2y) dy.(11.39)\mathrm{d}z = 2xy\,\mathrm{d}x + (x^2 + 2y)\,\mathrm{d}y. \tag{11.39} Evaluate the integral ∫(x1,y1)(x2,y2)dz\int_{(x_1,y_1)}^{(x_2,y_2)} \mathrm{d}z along the paths consisting of straight-line segments (i) (x1,y1)→(x2,y1)(x_1, y_1) \to (x_2, y_1) and then (x2,y1)→(x2,y2)(x_2, y_1) \to (x_2, y_2). (ii) (x1,y1)→(x1,y2)(x_1, y_1) \to (x_1, y_2) and then (x1,y2)→(x2,y2)(x_1, y_2) \to (x_2, y_2). Is dz\mathrm{d}z an exact differential?
