Problem

Let VV be a finite-dimensional vector space over the field FF and let SS and TT be linear operators on VV. We ask: When do there exist ordered bases B\mathfrak{B} and B′\mathfrak{B}' for VV such that [S]B=[T]B′[S]_{\mathfrak{B}} = [T]_{\mathfrak{B}'}? Prove that such bases exist if and only if there is an invertible linear operator UU on VV such that T=USU−1T = USU^{-1}. (Outline of proof: If [S]B=[T]B′[S]_{\mathfrak{B}} = [T]_{\mathfrak{B}'}, let UU be the operator which carries B\mathfrak{B} onto B′\mathfrak{B}' and show that S=UTU−1S = UTU^{-1}. Conversely, if T=USU−1T = USU^{-1} for some invertible UU, let B\mathfrak{B} be any ordered basis for VV and let B′\mathfrak{B}' be its image under UU. Then show that [S]B=[T]B′[S]_{\mathfrak{B}} = [T]_{\mathfrak{B}'}.)
