Problem

Evaluate the sum S(n)=∑k=1n(12−2k)S(n)=\displaystyle \sum_{k=1}^{n} \bigl(12 - 2k\bigr) and hence determine the least positive integer nn for which the sum becomes negative. a. (i) Obtain a simplified expression for S(n)S(n) in terms of nn. b. (ii) Using the result of part (i), find the smallest positive integer nn such that S(n)<0S(n) < 0.
