Problem

Minimizing a quadratic-over-linear fractional function. Consider the problem of minimizing the function f:Rn→Rf : \mathbf{R}^n \to \mathbf{R}, defined as f(x)=∥Ax−b∥22cTx+d,dom f={x∣cTx+d>0}.f(x) = \frac{\|Ax - b\|_2^2}{c^T x + d}, \qquad \mathbf{dom}\, f = \{x \mid c^T x + d > 0\}. We assume rank A=n\mathbf{rank}\, A = n and b∉R(A)b \notin \mathcal{R}(A). ((a)) Show that ff is closed. ((b)) Show that the minimizer x⋆x^\star of ff is given by x⋆=x1+tx2x^\star = x_1 + t x_2 where x1=(ATA)−1ATbx_1 = (A^T A)^{-1} A^T b, x2=(ATA)−1cx_2 = (A^T A)^{-1} c, and t∈Rt \in \mathbf{R} can be calculated by solving a quadratic equation.
