Problem

Prove the ratio test. Hint: If ∣an+1/an∣→ρ<1|a_{n+1}/a_n| \to \rho < 1, take σ\sigma so that ρ<σ<1\rho < \sigma < 1. Then ∣an+1/an∣<σ|a_{n+1}/a_n| < \sigma if nn is large, say n≥Nn \geq N. This means that we have ∣aN+1∣<σ∣aN∣|a_{N+1}| < \sigma|a_N|, ∣aN+2∣<σ∣aN+1∣<σ2∣aN∣|a_{N+2}| < \sigma|a_{N+1}| < \sigma^2|a_N|, and so on. Compare with the geometric series ∑n=1∞σn∣aN∣\displaystyle\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \sigma^n|a_N|. Also prove that a series with ρ>1\rho > 1 diverges. Hint: Take ρ>σ>1\rho > \sigma > 1, and use the preliminary test.
