Problem

Use the Drude formula σ=ne2τ/me\sigma = ne^2\tau/m_e in the Mott formula (8.178), and assume that the scattering time τ\tau has no energy dependence. In this case the only dependence of σ\sigma on the (Fermi) energy ϵ\epsilon comes from the electron density nn. Show in this case that the thermopower at low temperatures obeys Q=−SNee,(8.180)Q = -\frac{S}{N_e e},\tag{8.180} where NeN_e is the number of conduction electrons and SS is the entropy they carry. Miraculously, the scattering time τ\tau does not appear in this expression!
